Today we venture to Skaftafell and Jokulsarlon, may very well be the highlight of our trip. Skaftafell is a part of the biggest National Park in Iceland and offers unbelievable scenery. Jokulsarlon is a huge lagoon with floating icebergs, the brave can take a boat trip to get close to the icebergs. The canyon is about 2 km long and is about 100 meters deep. There is a hiking trail that follows the edges and gives you a beautiful view over the canyon. The various glacial tongues are flanked by jagged mountains, with the glacier-topped peak of Hvannadalshnjukur rising highest, or up 6921 ft, making it the highest point of Iceland.
Lunch at Hotel Glacier Lagoon
Zodiac ride - Boat ride on the ice lagoon. This is the perfect place to experience unspoiled nature and unique environment where huge icebergs calve off the largest glacier in Europe, the greatVatnajokull, and float around the lagoon in all shapes and colors.
Jokulsarlon lagoon and Diamond Beach: Jokulsarlon is a huge lagoon with floating icebergs, but in winter it often freezes over. Unlike a lake, a lagoon is a body of water that is connected to the ocean. As the icebergs exit the narrow channel at the mouth of the lagoon – a process that takes some time as the tides push them back in as well as draw them out, they break down further and eventually, they get swept out to sea or pushed up onto Diamond Beach. The beach is called Breiðamerkursandur, but the nickname Diamond Beach stuck, and for an obvious reason.
Optional: Lava show: Geologist talk and introduce a live demonstration of volcanic eruptions and lava flow. This is the only place in the world where you can safely experience hot molten lava in proximity! Experience the spectacle re-creation of a volcano eruption, very similar to Eyjafjallajökull and Katla volcanos, with the outpouring of molten lava (1100°C / 2000°F) into the showroom and over ice!
